The Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia launched its Anchor Economy Dashboard in fall 2022. The dashboard includes the economic impacts of hospitals and universities in all 524 regions of the U.S., expressed as income, employment and GVA and includes a new reliance index which measures how dependent regions are on “eds and meds” for economic activity. This first-ever national data set on the impacts of anchor institutions allows regions to compare themselves to peers, leverage the tool for policy-making and advocacy, and creates a foundation for regions to examine their local eds and meds community impacts. The Philadelphia Fed is conducting additional research on these sectors and convening anchor institutions to discuss their impacts.
